The concept of Made In Abyss is intriguing, but never grabbed me. What little character development there is pertains to the annoying protagonist. A heroine we come to find out is twelve years old, only she's drawn like a Chibi five year old, which is inconsistent with other characters, namely adults, who are drawn more traditionally. I bring this up due to the sexualizing of the main character, who at one point is strung up naked, likes to talk about peeing, and has her breasts fantasized over. I'm no prude, and maybe it's just the art style that makes all the kids look like toddlers, but aspects of this story give me bad vibes. I can't just gloss over them. Japan has issues with this kind of stuff, and it seems only in recent years that real effort has been made in battling the sexualisation of children. Beyond that, all I can say is there is potential here. There's a seed of a good story in Made In Abyss, and maybe it grows into an excellent story, but I feel like I wasted my money. For you prospective readers out there, and fellow artists, consider taking the time to draw a naked five year old girl strung up for being a naughty girl. Would you do it? I wouldn't, and I surely don't want to see it. This one's going in the trash bin. Whoa, boy.I had been conflicted on reading this series for a while given its raving reviews, but also occasional criticisms of troubling, sexualized depiction of child characters. Having read through the series now, I'm pretty dumbfounded more folks haven't expressed stronger opposition to this series... The child characters are "punished" by being strung up naked, there's mention of sodomizing the young (albeit robot) boy, multiple references/focuses on his penis/erections, innuendos and sometimes direct references to sex between the two main characters, and a nude portrait of prepubescent female character(s) is displayed on either the front or back cover of practically each volume. Again, we are talking about child characters, cartoon or not. The author's fixation on urination/bed-wetting and defecation are also very clear and abundantly represented. I strongly disagree with the arguments that these depictions are small, meek, and not warranting attention. There's a pretty clear sexualized intent. My sense is you would have to be either highly unaware or willfully ignorant to not see them and take issue with them. I'm surprised this content has been published, and furthermore, that it has accrued such a fan base without more vocal opposition. My discomfort with this content began from early on in the first volume, but only continued, with my only remaining motivation to continue reading being that I wished to be able to adequately speak to the collective problems with the series--especially in light of its strong praise.I will state, the general artwork is beautiful, aside from the depiction of 12 year-olds' facial expressions possessing frequent sexual undertones. The world is intriguing and dark. Yet, overall I did not find the story nearly as amazing/masterful as people often boast it to be. Any enjoyment of the small developments of the story would be disrupted by yet another uncomfortable and unnecessary return to the author's fixations. Overall, the world/story did not stand out as particularly special to me, and certainly did not outweigh the problematic aspects of the series whatsoever. If you are one who loves and adores the series--hey, that's for you to determine and accept. However, my intention of leaving this review is to help folks feeling compelled to explore a highly rated manga, but who would not wish to consume/purchase something with these problematic aspects involved. If you're on the fence, I would stay away. I disagree with folks that say it is not that bad. It's unfortunate. And again, I'm saddened it isn't called out more often or more strongly... I chose to return the purchase and won't continue to read. The item description should include a concrete warning regarding these aspects of its content.
