I think the smile on the priest’s face was because he knew his brother would find and stop his killer but it was never mentioned by anyone. The double story line with surprises from all directions was excellent and handled well. When I’m surprised to find out who the killer is, I consider the story very well done. I believe I was in college when I discovered Catherine Coulter's historical romances, and I remember really enjoying them. Soon I discovered her FBI series, and I, again, remember really enjoying the first few books. I'm not sure exactly what happened, if my expectations changed as I got older, or if Ms. Coulter's writing just deteriorated, but I now find her writing to be so hard to take. For the most part, I do like the storylines of her books (FBI series), and I think I continue to read them when I come across them because I hold out hope that the writing I think I remember from this author will return, but sadly, this has not happened. I have two major issues with this book (and with most of the books I've read in this series) -- the first is the dialogue this writer includes, it is so unrealistic and just drives me crazy. The second is how unrealistic the characters' actions and behaviors are. I certainly expect an escape from reality when I sit down with a fiction book, but I also don't want to read something that I think insults my intelligence. I am not in law enforcement, I am not a lawyer, but that does not mean I have absolutely no understanding of procedures and laws. I am also not a writer, but i do know that one of the major rules of writing is to write what you know, and if you want to write about something you don't know, then you need to research your topic so you do know it. I believe that good authors do this, they either know their topic, or they have enough respect for their readers to research their topic. I feel as if Ms. Coulter is so anxious to pump out a new book to sell that she does not take any time to really mesh out her stories, research the areas that would benefit from a reality check, and create dialogue that most of us can relate to because we can imagine such a conversation actually occurring. In all honesty I will probably give another book in this series a try, I love the romance-mystery genre and I am an optimist and remain hopeful that the books will get better.
