I always wait with bated breath for Alessandra Hazard's new novels. I've read everything she's written since the beginning, and loved every single one of them (having read literally hundreds of m/m romance novels and authors, that's unprecedented). While I loved even her earliest works, it's been great to see how much she's developed as an author. One Upon a Time is a perfect example: This is not merely an entertaining romance novel, though it is that, set in a complex and interesting world, though it is that too. Through the various "bonds" that her characters experience, AH is exploring much deeper ideas about the nature of love and attraction: What does it mean to "love"? To be "attracted" to someone? Is it real if it's somehow programmed in us? Does it matter if the programming is "natural" or "artificial"? Can love or attraction that starts one way transform into something else?Rohan and Jamil are both great characters, and I loved them together. Their HEA was much deserved. SIGH. I can't can't can't wait for the next book in the series. (I love a great anti-hero!) I am LOVING this series, but in particular this latest book is compelling from beginning to end. I thought that I might not like Jamil's character type at first, but the chemistry and romance that he shares with Rohan captures the imagination. They both ended up being two of my favorite characters from this author.At first, there is no physical intimacy because one character is heterosexual. The author uses the fact that most of the characters in the universe that she has created have telepathic abilities, and this provides an opportunity for a slow and deep intimacy to develop between the main characters. It begins non-sexual and slowly blooms into something very lovely to read as the heat between the main characters increases with every chapter.Seeing friendship and love described in a manner that encompasses a person's whole being is a bit blush worthy. I don't think there were more than a couple of 'naughty' scenes that physically happened in the book between the two, but they had VERY vivid imaginations!I know I should talk more about the over arcing plot that spans the books, because it really is interesting how they all connect and tie together. It would probably be a good idea to read over the other books in the series because events do get referenced that might leave you with a bit of confusion if you don't. It's not strictly necessary, but they're fun reads.NO regrets about this purchase.
