Book Tell Me (Savannah Book 3) Review :

So, this book continues with the Pierce Reed and Nikki Gillette pairing that began in Book 2 of the Savannah series. From a romance perspective, this book was just as disappointing as the previous one, so if you prefer actual romantic aspects to your romantic suspense stories, you'll most likely be disappointed with this book. For a good chunk of this story, we actually have both Reed and Nikki periodically wondering if they should be getting married. At the start of this book, they are engaged and the wedding is supposed to take place in just a few weeks. Mind you, they have been together as a couple now for a few years, but they still don't live together. They each have their own apartment and occasionally spend the night together. Odd.I found their lack of faith in each other to be depressing (too much realism for romantic fiction, or any kind of fiction, in my opinion). I don't want the stark realities of life in my escapist reading. For those of you who like sex in your stories, there are a couple of very mild sex scenes between Reed and Nikki. No passion, no heat. Their whole relationship, frankly, was just, meh.The book had potential as a suspense story, but there were aspects of it that just didn't fit or make sense. There are these weird italicized conversations between an unknown female (Nikki?) and Blondell in prison. It's like they're supposed to be leading up to something that never happens. Then at the end of the book, there is another one of these convos with someone other than Blondell. That one made more sense, but why the switch to this style of writing?I found it difficult to like Nikki. She was okay. She is a typical nosy/pushy reporter who makes a pest of herself (even to Reed) when she wants something that has to do with a story she's working on. Never mind the fact that Reed is a detective and he could lose his job if he was found to be supplying her with information she shouldn't have. And there were a couple of times that she earned the TSTL label - especially when she went haring off to the cabin without even telling Reed. Had she used her brain, she not only would have told him about this, she would have taken him with her. She just did some really stupid things. There were also some discrepancies between dates. Supposedly, the wedding is going to take place right around Christmas, but in various parts of the story, we have references to it being November and even January, so there was no consistency with this (other than the fact that it was winter). As a romantic suspense story, this one fell completely flat. Very little romance - very little affection between our two main characters at all, for that matter. Passable, I guess, as a straight suspense story, but when you factor in the issues I mentioned above, it really detracts from the effectiveness of the whole thing.
Where to start. First of all, It took such a long time to get into it. Then half way through i thought I was going crazy with all the scene changes without a smooth transition (right in the middle of a random paragraph all of a sudden we were somewhere else!) I even had to check out the reviews to solidify this strange writing style, and lo and behold others mentioned it as well. It was so choppy! Another negative, so many purposeless characters I couldn’t retain who did what, where or when or with whom. Then there were random stories told that had nothing to do with the mystery itself. Another turn off was the language used. It was told in a “hick” sort of language to then using big elaborate words that didn’t seem to fit in with the context of the story. Almost seemed like the writer was trying too hard and threw in random vocabulary but made the “flow” (if there was flow) of the story awkward. I only gave it a two star because there were maybe two times out of reading this I was actually quite engaged.
